How Much Resveratrol Should You Take Each Day?
Resveratrol, renowned for helping people lose weight, gain energy, and age more slowly, is the pigment responsible for giving red grapes their characteristic purple color.
The compound received a great deal of media exposure as scientists were researching the potential benefits of red wine consumption.
Originally, scientists believed resveratrol explained why the French have a relatively low incidence of heart disease in spite of their diets, which are relatively high in saturated fat.
While wine does not contain enough resveratrol to completely explain the so-called “French paradox,” it has nonetheless been linked to good health and is being investigated more.
Studies in nematodes, fish, and fruit flies indicate the substance extends their lives, but such results were not replicated in mouse models.
Given the news coming out about this powerful nutrient, how can you be sure you are obtaining enough of it in your daily life to enjoy its potential benefits?
What is the Proper Resveratrol Dosage?
Doctors and researchers do not agree on a dosage, but here are some means of incorporating resveratrol into your dietary routine so that you can benefit from it as researchers continue their work and learn more about the compound’s myriad of uses.
Resveratrol can be extracted from natural resources or synthesized. The Japanese Knotweed herb is one way of getting a concentrated dose of resveratrol.
Japanese Knotweed is often used for treating digestive problems. It is the main source of resveratrol in most resveratrol products, and can contain up to 187 mg of resveratrol per kilogram of herb. Thus, taking 25 grams of Japanese Knotweed would yield 4.7 mg of resveratrol.
Not surprisingly, the labels on some supplements suggest higher doses of resveratrol.
Laboratory students seem to indicate that people can take up to 500 mg a day, but high doses can cause diarrhea and dehydration.
In order to obtain that much resveratrol, one would need to take a highly concentrated resveratrol supplement; eating grapes or drinking red wine would not suffice.
For comparison, a liter of very dark red wine provides less than 13 mg of resveratrol. You would need to drink far too many liters of red wine in order to take in that much resveratrol. Needless to say, that is a course no one should pursue!
Death by alcohol is NOT recommended.
At least one naturopath suggests taking 20 to 50 mg of resveratrol daily in order to benefit from resveratrol intake. In her opinion, higher doses may be needed for therapy, but should be taken under the guise of a health professional.
Understanding the different Resveratrol dosage levels can help you out quite a bit when it comes to understanding Resveratrol dosage intakes:
- Inconsequential Resveratrol Dosage: Under 100 mg of Resveratrol per day.
- Low Resveratrol Dosage: Around 100-500 mg of Resveratrol per day.
- Medium Resveratrol Dosage: About 500-1500 mg of Resveratrol per day.
- High Resveratrol Dosage: Over 1500MG of Resveratrol per day
