Resveratrol Helps Repair Damage from Strokes

Resveratrol is an antibiotic produced naturally by several plants when under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi.

Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and is a constituent of red wine, but apparently not in sufficient amounts to have any significant benefits on humans.

Experiments have shown that resveratrol treatment extended the life of fruit flies, nematode worms and short living fish but it did not increase the life span of mice. In tests on mice, Resveratrol has acted as an anti cancer agent, lowered blood sugar, increased cardiovascular function and removed brain plaque.

In fact, resveratrol has the potential to fight the three most common types of diseases for the modern man, such as:

Resveratrol therefore has antibiotic capabilities for the plants which produce it, and has antioxidant properties which may prevent and repair damage done by free radical cells in the body.

In addition to these, some studies have shown that resveratrol is an anti-mutagen and an anti-inflammatory. As an anti-mutagen, it inhibits the mutation of healthy normal cells into cancerous growths and tumors. As an anti-inflammatory, resveratrol reduces inflammation, treating pain.

Stroke Damage

Strokes occur mainly due to forming of blood clots or rupture of an artery in the brain causing the blood supply to the brain to decrease to a dangerous level. This causes a sudden death of brain cells or neurons.

The most common symptom is weakness or paralysis of one side of the body or the other. There may be partial or complete loss of voluntary movement of and/or sensation in a leg and/or arm.

A stroke can result in speech problems and weakens muscles of the face, which can cause drooling. Numbness or tingling is very common. A stroke can cause difficulty in breathing and even unconsciousness.

Resveratrol to the Rescue

In a Resveratrol study, researchers demonstrated that Resveratrol protects the brain from damage caused during strokes by actually increasing the blood flow to the brain thus minimizing the loss of neurons.

Resveratrol has been shown to act as an anti inflammatory and also to protect against free radicals, both of which can be factors in a stroke.

Mice who were dosed regularly with Resveratrol suffered less brain and motor damage after a stroke than those who were not treated with Resveratrol, during studies conducted at the National Chia-Yi University and the National Taiwan Normal University

Conclusion

The benefits of Resveratrol as a three way preventive drug may lead some scientists and wine lovers to believe that drinking wine may help fight cancer and increase overall health. The research is especially significant for those with a higher risk of having strokes.

The use of Resveratrol supplements may dramatically decrease the risk of a stroke by increasing blood flow by dilating blood vessels.

The lack of documented side effects should not be taken to indicate that Resveratrol is perfectly safe however; limited testing and the relative newness of the drug mean that long term effects have yet to be observed.

If you are at an increased risk of suffering from a stroke, either due to poor health or genetic predisposition, it certainly will not hurt you to start using resveratrol on a regular basis starting today.
