How many times have you been told that if you want to be healthy you need to eat your fruits and vegetables? Bring on the broccoli and acai fruit!

Whether the advice comes from a health professional, your parents, or your spouse, there is significant evidence to support the claim that people who consume more of these foods are less prone to disease.

One of the reasons, as discussed in May’s Juvenon Health Journal, may be a substance called resveratrol. Many plants such as grapes and other red berries, contain beneficial concentrations of the nutrient.

The natural curative, resveratrol, is now suspected to be a powerful treatment for osteoporosis, though its healthful effects for other conditions have been known for some time. Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant with a variety of powerful health benefits.


Antioxidant Benefits

An antioxidant, like vitamin C and E, resveratrol spends its time destroying free radicals that can damage cells. Resveratrol is the molecule in wine with beneficial effects on heart disease that may explain why the wine drinking French have less heart disease despite their high fat diet.

In mice, resveratrol has shown to have anti-aging properties, lengthening the lifespan by 30-50%. Its many effects have now been extended to bone metabolism.

Studies on Bone Cells

Research shows resveratrol has some properties of the hormone estrogen and therefore can affect bone metabolism. In fact, laboratory rats with bone loss tendencies and cell cultures were both affected by resveratrol. The tendency to form bones in these models were enhanced by resveratrol.

Resveratrol behaved like an estrogen on bones.

Genes in the DNA that cause bone forming cells to grow were activated. These cells, known as osteoblasts, produce the protein and minerals that glue together to form bone. In addition, the cells that degrade bone protein and minerals, known as osteoclasts, were inhibited.

Resveratrol and Cancer

Resveratrol has an additional advantage over other bone loss therapies. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of some cancerous tumors. It has been linked to a DNA gene that makes a protein molecule in cells that naturally “suppress” the growth of tumors.

Other treatments for bone loss, known as hormone replacement therapies, have been linked with cancer. So, resveratrol may have an anti-cancer advantage over these other treatments.

Potential Bone Enhancer and Cancer Suppressor

Resveratrol is a molecule found in nature that has been associated with several anti-aging effects which now includes the prevention of bone loss. This finding is new enough so that it can only be confidently linked to the effects on mice and cell cultures. Nonetheless, it gives special hope to those suffering from osteoporosis.

If initial indications pan out in humans, resveratrol may not only reduce bone loss. It may do this by a mechanism that does not carry a risk of cancer as a side effect. In fact it may even have cancer fighting properties.

Sounds to me like great news for women: stronger bones and less cancer!
